How Do I Clean My Mattress?

Mattresses

Being the extremely important investment they are, it’s important to keep your mattress clean. But how often should you clean it? And what do you need to clean it properly?

Generally speaking, you should clean your mattress once every six months to ensure a good level of cleanliness -- this is true on both hard and soft mattresses.

It’s really easy to clean your mattress. You’ll just need some easy to find cleaning supplies:

  • A hoover with an upholstery attachment
  • Proper stain remover for your stains
  • Clean, cold water
  • Cloth or some other material
  • Enough baking soda to cover the entire bed with at least one layer

Step 1: Strip Bedding off Your Bed

Take all the bedding off your bed and clean it.

Your washing machine should do the trick well -- although if you have delicate bedding you might want to do it by hand. Whether you decide to use the washing machine or not, hot water is best (as it removes dust mites). If you decide to use the washing machine, make sure you pay attention to the temperature and spin cycle count -- as having these two high or two low may affect the quality of the clean.

Step 2: Hoover the Bed

Attach the upholstery attachment to your hoover and give it a spin over with your vacuum to remove any easy to hoover particles. Make sure you pay attention to the seams of your mattress -- as pieces of dust and crumbs can lodge themselves there, and you may need to work extra hard to get into the crevices (especially if you are dealing with an uneven surface).

Step 4: Take Out Stains

The next step is to remove the stains out of the mattress. This might sound easy, but it can require quite a bit of thought!

The reason behind this is that certain stains require certain types of cleaning agent. For example, biological stains require a good enzyme cleaner. It’s important to remember that you should never apply any kind of cleaner directly to the mattress -- as this can damage the mattress material.

Whatever the cleaner you use, you should spray it onto a clean white cloth, and then blot the area with a cloth.  Afterwards, repeat the process, only with the enzyme cleaner replaced with cold water.

Step 5: Cover the Mattress With Baking Soda

Ideally at this stage, you’d put your mattress out in the sun and allow it to absorb the fresh air. However, if that isn’t an option (and it rarely is) then sprinkling a layer of baking soda over the entire top surface of the mattress is another great option. Afterwards, leave it to dry. Ideally, you’d leave it for the entire night to seep in, but if you have to use it then a few hours should be long enough.

Baking soda absorbs moisture and breaks down any residual acid stuck to the material. Because of that, it removes odors very well.

Make sure you keep the window open while you’re using baking soda, though -- inhalation of baking soda can lead to some nasty health problems!

Step 6: Hoover (Again)

Finally, hoover the mattress once again and give your mattress a bit of a shake -- as to remove any remaining baking soda particles.

Once you’ve finished hoovering your mattress, your mattress should be ready for use once again.

All you need to do now is make the bed once again and then have a good night’s sleep!
