Protecting Your Mattress Against Allergens

Posted on - 21st July 2022

We are firmly in the middle of hay fever and allergy season. As such, you will need proven method to protect your mattress against allergens.

In one of our previous blogs, we looked at ways to keep you cool in your bedroom as well as ways to secure your bedroom against the elements of summer. In that blog, we alluded to the fact that allergens can become attached to your mattress making it very problematic for those who struggle with allergies.

You have probably heard a lot of the facts by now. One such fact is that one in four people in the UK suffer from hayfever in the summer. This suggests that there are an awful lot of people struggling to sleep throughout the summer due to a blocked nose, persistent cough and general head aches. You can have your mattress in Telford, Shrewsbury or pretty much anywhere else in the UK for that matter, but this will always be a problem.

If you are struggling to sleep because you are suffering from allergens, we have some tips to protect you and your mattress against them this summer. While we say you should protect your mattress against allergens, you should actually adopt the approach of protecting your entire room against the hindrances.

By ensuring pollen or other allergens do not make it into your rooms initially, you ensure that your mattress is more likely to remain allergen free. So, let’s look at ways to stop pesky allergens from entering your bedroom in the first place.

Change Your Bedsheet More Frequently

It is usually recommended to change your bedsheets every 1 to 2 weeks. However, during hay fever season, it is of paramount importance to change your bed sheets more often. Changing your bedsheets at least once a week is a surefire way to mitigate the buildup of pollen and other allergens on your bed and subsequently, your mattress.

Dust More Frequently

On a similar basis to changing your bedding more frequently to ensure allergens do not build up as quickly or as frequently; you might want to dust your bedroom surfaces more often too.

If you do not dust your surfaces; pollen, dust and other potential allergens can build up meaning if a gust of wind hits it, the substance will be dispersed around your room. Accompanying this is the fact that the allergens can affect you straight from the surface itself.

Try Not To Open Your Window (Especially During The Evening)

As you might have guessed, if the majority of pollen is contracted from the outside, when you open a window this means you are allowing them to enter your room.

While it may be tempting to open your window during the evening to allow the decidedly cooler air in, this can actually be to your detriment in terms of allergen particles. In the evening, pollen levels rise. As such, opening the window during the evening will allow more pollen in. So, this summer, you should maybe be more vigilant about opening a window in the evening.

Apply Floorcare

While we have covered dusting your surfaces and changing your bedsheets, one place people frequently forgot about accumulating pollen, is the floor. If you have a hardwood floor, pollen does not accumulate here as frequently. Although, you should still clean the floor as frequently as possible.

If you have a carpet however, you should aim to hoover at least once a day. This is because allergens get trapped a lot more frequently in carpets.
