How do I clean a memory foam mattress?

Keeping your mattress clean is no easy feat. You can regularly change your sheets, shower before bed, even wear a hairnet, but your mattress will still collect all the grimes of life as you sleep. The best method, whilst still not perfect, is to buy yourself a thick mattress topper, but why treat yourself to the comfiest of beds to throw a topper on it and change the whole feel of the bed. Memory foam mattresses are overall more hygienic than the standard mattress, however, this doesn't take away from the fact that they still require a good and regular clean. Many memory foam mattresses have a removable cover. This will usually come with washing instructions, ideally, follow these where possible. If they don't have instructions avoid using the washing machine and dryer. Opt for spot cleaning or hand washing. Steam cleaning or dry cleaning is usually preferable. Take your memory foam inner, and apply a light sprinkling of baking soda, this will help to absorb moisture that is currently in the foam and to reduce or eliminate odours. Leave your baking soda for around ten minutes to work its magic. Then simply vacuum this up. Finally, take a sponge and some warm soapy water and begin to spot clean ant remaining marks. Try to use as little water as this will help to speed the drying process up. If you have a memory foam mattress with a particularly strong odour, adding some white vinegar to the water can help with this.To dry, using a dry towel or even better, paper towels, press out as much moisture as you can. You will then need to leave the mattress to completely dry out. Ideally, this would be overnight, however, if you are planning to use the mattress that night we recommend you clean it as early in the day as possible to allow drying time. We recommend that you hoover your mattress each time you change your sheets. This will help to keep any unwanted smells at bay for as long as possible and leave you with a fresher feeling bed.

How can I naturally sleep better?

Finding yourself wide awake hours after you planned to be asleep? There are a number of ways to naturally help yourself to get a better night's sleep. Firstly, ensuring that you have the right mattress for you can help to have a big impact on your sleep, or indeed how quickly you can drift into the land of nod. Find yourself a mattress that supports your back whilst offering you the comfort you need to settle down with ease. Ensure that you pair this with the right bedding, including lighter duvets in summer to reduce overheating. If your home is warm throughout the night in winter, you may not need a winter duvet, as you will find yourself unable to cool down. You may find that you cannot fall to sleep easily due to your lifestyle. Unfortunately, this is where you may need to listen a little closer to the advice of healthcare professionals. Ensuring that you are healthy physically will help you to get a better night's sleep. Having a healthy diet, cutting down on alcohol and stopping smoking are all ways to help improve your sleep. A good amount of exercise each day will also help to encourage deep sleep, we aren't saying you need to train for a marathon, light exercise will be enough. Reducing your screen time coming up to your bedtime will also help to improve how quickly you fall asleep. The blue light of your screen keeps your brain active, meaning that even after you switch your devices off, your brain is awake and working in overdrive, meaning you can't fall straight to sleep. Give reading or a crossword puzzle a go so as to avoid screens. If you find yourself requiring a new mattress more suited to you, head over to our mattresses page to see what we have that will be right for you. How Do I Clean My Mattress?

Being the extremely important investment they are, it’s important to keep your mattress clean. But how often should you clean it? And what do you need to clean it properly? Generally speaking, you should clean your mattress once every six months to ensure a good level of cleanliness -- this is true on both hard and soft mattresses.  It’s really easy to clean your mattress. You’ll just need some easy to find cleaning supplies: A hoover with an upholstery attachment Proper stain remover for your stains Clean, cold water Cloth or some other material Enough baking soda to cover the entire bed with at least one layer Step 1: Strip Bedding off Your Bed Take all the bedding off your bed and clean it.  Your washing machine should do the trick well -- although if you have delicate bedding you might want to do it by hand. Whether you decide to use the washing machine or not, hot water is best (as it removes dust mites). If you decide to use the washing machine, make sure you pay attention to the temperature and spin cycle count -- as having these two high or two low may affect the quality of the clean.  Step 2: Hoover the Bed Attach the upholstery attachment to your hoover and give it a spin over with your vacuum to remove any easy to hoover particles. Make sure you pay attention to the seams of your mattress -- as pieces of dust and crumbs can lodge themselves there, and you may need to work extra hard to get into the crevices (especially if you are dealing with an uneven surface).  Step 4: Take Out Stains The next step is to remove the stains out of the mattress. This might sound easy, but it can require quite a bit of thought!  The reason behind this is that certain stains require certain types of cleaning agent. For example, biological stains require a good enzyme cleaner. It’s important to remember that you should never apply any kind of cleaner directly to the mattress -- as this can damage the mattress material.  Whatever the cleaner you use, you should spray it onto a clean white cloth, and then blot the area with a cloth.  Afterwards, repeat the process, only with the enzyme cleaner replaced with cold water.  Step 5: Cover the Mattress With Baking Soda Ideally at this stage, you’d put your mattress out in the sun and allow it to absorb the fresh air. However, if that isn’t an option (and it rarely is) then sprinkling a layer of baking soda over the entire top surface of the mattress is another great option. Afterwards, leave it to dry. Ideally, you’d leave it for the entire night to seep in, but if you have to use it then a few hours should be long enough.  Baking soda absorbs moisture and breaks down any residual acid stuck to the material. Because of that, it removes odors very well.  Make sure you keep the window open while you’re using baking soda, though -- inhalation of baking soda can lead to some nasty health problems!  Step 6: Hoover (Again) Finally, hoover the mattress once again and give your mattress a bit of a shake -- as to remove any remaining baking soda particles.  Once you’ve finished hoovering your mattress, your mattress should be ready for use once again.  All you need to do now is make the bed once again and then have a good night’s sleep!  If you have any questions about our range of mattresses -- are unsure about the specific one for you, would like more information on sizing -- get in contact with us today.
