How can you help to increase the cleanliness of your mattress or is it time to bite the bullet and replace it? Find out more here:

Over the summer months, you will notice that you are warmer in bed, open windows also lead to increased bugs and pollen also landing on your bed. This all leads to one unhygienic mattress, no matter how often you change your bedsheets. So how can you help to increase the cleanliness of your mattress or is it time to bite the bullet and replace it?

Cleaning Years Of Grime

If you have not yet cleaned your mattress, and it's at least a year old, you might be looking at a little more cleaning than if you had kept on top of your cleaning from new.
Firstly you will want to completely hoover the top surface of the mattress (if you have flipped the mattress and never hoovered it you might want to do both sides). You can also hoover the sides if you wish, particularly if it's never been done.
Next, you will be working on removing embedded grime. Where you have stains, using a sponge dipped in detergent water, use circular motions from the edge and carefully work your way to the centre. Try not to use excess moisture where possible.
If your mattress is significantly stained, you can use an upholstery attachment on a wet vac. Please read your instructions and ensure that as much moisture is taken back out of the mattress to reduce drying time or damp smells. Ensure that your mattress is fully dry before making your bed.

Regular Cleaning

Keeping up with regular cleaning can help to reduce the need for bigger cleans. Each time you change your bed, hoovering your mattress will help to reduce the number of bacteria that are stored in the mattress. Spot cleaning any spillages straight away will also reduce stains.
Investing in a good quality mattress topper can also help to make your mattress last longer. While you may not wash this every time you change your bed, cleaning it at least every other will greatly reduce the bacteria that hits your mattress.

Time For A Change

We all know that the recommended lifespan of a mattress is 8 years. However, not keeping on top of cleaning your mattress means that this lifespan can be drastically reduced. Rather than waiting for your mattress to become uncomfortable or damaged, you might want to take a look at the physical appearance of your mattress too. Heavy staining and visible wear can be a surefire sign that your mattress is past its best.
