As we only swap our mattresses once every 8 years, when it comes to that time, you might be left wondering what you can do with your old mattress. You have a number of options available to you, you just need to ensure that you opt for the one best for you and that you are disposing of your mattress appropriately.

Skips

If you are already planning an overhaul of your whole bedroom (or another room in your house) the easiest way for you to dispose of your old, unwanted mattress would be to hire a skip and dispose of all of your waste in one effective place.
Responsible skip companies will ensure that your waste will then be recycled as and where possible, including any metal springs in your mattress.

The Tip

Your local tip/recycling facility will have an onsite area for you to dispose of your unwanted mattress. Some may have restrictions and requirements, so if you are unsure head onto your local council site, or give the local facility a call to ensure that you can safely dispose of your mattress here.
If you are taking your mattress in a car, please ensure that it is safely secured and does not obstruct your vision in any direction. Please avoid tying your mattress to the roof of your car.

Charity

There are a number of charities in the UK that will be grateful to have a mattress from you. From a number of homeless charities that use them in shelters, women's refuges, children's centres and charities that set up families in new homes.
The other charitable option is to take your mattress to a charity shop for it to be sold. The money will then go to that charity. You will need to contact the particular store in advance as not all will take mattresses.
However, if you are looking at donating your mattress to charity, we do recommend that this is only done with mattresses that are still in a fair condition as it takes extra resources for the charity to dispose of this if they are in too poor condition.

Removals

There are a number of individuals or small companies that offer removal services, and one of the main services available is mattress disposal (or tip/skip runs). While this option is usually great for many people, as it's relatively cheap, usually they can take the mattress from the room to their vehicle and you no longer have to worry about it. However, this option is unfortunately the riskiest. If you hire someone to remove the mattress for you, ensure that they are a reputable person so that it does not end up fly-tipped as this will come back on you if traced back.
