Do You Need A Soft, Medium, or Firm Mattress?

At Dial-a-Mattress, we stock many high-quality mattresses. But which type of mattress do you require? Do you need a soft, medium or firm one?

Did you know the average person spends around a third of their life sleeping? That seems like an extremely long time to be laying on a mattress. With that amount of time, a high-quality mattress is the key to the best possible sleep.

We understand that life changes as you become older and your mattress requirements can change too, this is usually due to health conditions such as back problems. If you’re not a mattress expert like us here at Dial-A-Mattress, you might think all mattresses are exactly the same, regardless of the price tag. However, mattresses come in different firmness levels.

The level of firmness is a key factor you’ll want to consider when choosing the right mattress because it will affect how comfortable you feel every night. As such, we want to share the difference between each level of firmness in mattresses. After reading this article, we hope that you’ll know what to look for when it’s time to upgrade and shop for a new mattress.

Soft

If you define yourself as a side sleeper, you wouldn’t be comfortable sleeping on a rock hard mattress. You will need a soft mattress to relieve the pressure on your shoulders and hips. Soft mattresses are well known for having superior pressure relief, so side sleepers should keep this in mind.

Soft mattresses are a perfect match for people who struggle with arthritis because they often experience joint or hip pain. A memory foam mattress is designed to sink and hug your body to relieve these pains.

Medium

A medium mattress is positioned in the middle of the firmness scale. These mattresses offer the best of both worlds, sitting in between soft and firm support. Medium mattresses still provide enough softness to lay on but they are slightly more firm than a soft mattress. They keep the spine in a neutral position while sleeping by reducing the hugging body effect.

Medium to firm mattresses are the most popular choice for individuals without any requirements. A pocket sprung mattress is a great example that offers medium to firm support for back sleepers. Pocket sprung mattresses are made with springs in separate sleaves, meaning the springs work independently. As a result, moulding better to your body shape and ensuring all-round support. Couples will benefit from a pocket sprung mattress because you won't feel the twisting and turning from a restless partner.

Firm

A firm mattress may feel more stiff to the touch but it provides the highest amount of support to hold up your body, rather than letting your body sink into a slumber. A firm mattress also has a better cooling effect than a soft mattress. If you regularly feel too hot during the night, a firm or a medium to firm mattress will help ease this issue. These mattresses are generally the most long wearing because they take longer to soften.

By switching to a firmer mattress such as a traditional sprung mattress, more of your body is exposed to the air in the room. If you’re a stomach sleeper, a firm mattress offers more support to prevent you from sinking in too much while keeping your body alignment properly.
