Summer Proofing Your Mattress In Telford

Posted on - 22nd June 2022

Mattresses in Telford go through a lot year round, but now that summer has arrived, let look at ways to summer proof your mattress.

Back in January, we looked at ways to get the most of your mattress in the winter. Afterall, during the winter, your mattress can see quite the substantial amount of elemental exposure. On a similar note, now that summer is almost upon us, we thought it an opportune time to look at ways to get the most out of your mattress this summer.

Many of our customers will understand that winter can be a potentially problematic time for your mattress, but a lot of them might be unaware that summer can be just as, if not more, complicated.

Hot weather temperatures can have a drastic impact on your mattress. This is not to mention the other potential seasonal hazards available. Mattresses in Telford can go through quite the journey in summertime. So let’s look at ways to summer proof your mattress this coming summer.

Protect Against Pollen

An increasing problem in Telford during the summer period is hay fever. It is estimated that one in four people suffer with hayfever across the UK. With so many hayfever sufferers and pollon being at year high levels, you will want to combat this quickly and effectively.

The simple and most effective way to protect you against hay fever and to ensure your sleep is not affected by it is by ensuring pollen does not get on your mattress, pillows or bed sheets to begin with. If pollon happens to get on these bed features, as you might have guessed, you will be having an immediate allergic reaction.

One simple way to stop this from happening is by putting spare sheets or clothes over them to stop them from attracting pollen. If you do not happen to have a spare bed sheet, a blanket or any other material which can be used to cover your mattress will be sufficient.

To keep pollen at bay, you should also ensure windows and doors remain closed where possible. While you might be tempted to open windows and doors during the evening to help to cool your bedroom down; this can actually be to your detriment. During the evening, pollen levels are actually much higher than in the middle of the day. Accompanying this is the fact that the night time is usually a lot more windy resulting in pollen being pushed into your bedroom.

If you happen to have one of our deluxe and luxurious bed frames from Telford, you might want to consider dusting it down every now and then. As you might have guessed, pollen can get stuck on the headboard resulting in the accidental consumption of pollen.

Keeping It Cool

It is estimated that between 30%-50% of people in the UK struggle to sleep during heat waves or other hot temperatures.

As such, you will understand the majority of people wanting to keep their bedroom, and subsequently their mattresses cool. You might be tempted to just stick a fan directly on your mattress to cool it down, however, this has proven ineffective and is highly not recommended.

One way to keep your mattress cooler is to keep yourself cooler. You can do this by having a lightweight duvet or bedsheets. It is recommended to have a 2.5-4.5 tog duvet during the summer to ensure you remain at a cooler temperature.

Another very simple but effective technique is to improve air circulation where possible. As mentioned, sometimes you will want to keep windows and doors closed to combat against pollen but sometimes, you have to increase airflow to simply cool the room and therefore the mattress down.

Some mattress types are actually cooler than others. For example, the famous memory foam mattress uses thermal technology to ensure the mattress remains cooler compared to it’s competitors.

Choosing the correct mattress topper is very important when it comes to keeping your mattress cool. There are luckily mattress toppers designed to keep your mattress cool. These  have proven highly effective and are actually quite relatively easy to come by.
