Each year the Month of March is celebrated as National Bed Month by The Sleep Council. Year on year we promote healthy sleeping patterns, best bed practices and how to know the right bed for you. Despite the fact that we are in Lockdown this year, we still want you to know that we are still here for you and all your National Bed Month needs.

National Bed Month 2021

This year we have all spent more time at home, more time in bed, and truly made the most of being at home. However, this means that we have gotten into a variety of bad bedroom habits that we need to break in order to improve our quality of sleep, ready for when we can finally re-enter the world post lockdown.
So what habit have we picked up and how can we improve them? This month we have gathered together just a few that you might have found yourself doing, and a tip or two on how to bring yourself back out of this habit:

Sleeping in late

With many people on furlough, and another selection of people working from home, more and more of us are falling into the habit of sleeping in late. Where we used to get up, have a drink or some breakfast before we would make the morning commute, we are now rolling to the laptop or computer, coffee in hand, and balancing breakfast next to us.
Time to get moving at the time we normally would. Whether you get up, have breakfast and read a book or watch the news, or head outside for a morning stroll before coming back enjoying a good breakfast before you log onto work.

Going to bed late

As we are all getting up that bit later, we are also finding ourselves going to bed later and finding ourselves in a never-ending cycle that we just can't break. Time to pull yourself out of the cycle and work towards repairing our old routine.
Get yourself heading to bed a little earlier each day, and remove all of the distractions from your bedroom that will stop you from drifting off to sleep. If you do choose to watch TV or play on your phone when you get into bed, give yourself a time that all blue screens need to be off by, we recommend this to be at least an hour before you plan to be asleep to give your brain a chance to relax. If you find yourself itching for something to do as your brain begins to relax, look at picking up a book or a Wordsearch, with only a lamp rather than a main bright light.

Eating in bed

Unfortunately, another habit that many seem to have picked up during lockdown is eating in bed. Whether this is because we are spending most of our time here, or just because we are comfortable. We should be avoiding this as much as possible. Eating in bed can not only leave you with those annoying little crumbs on the sheets, but can also leave the smell of food in the room. This will distract you (or more your senses) when it is time to lay down for sleep. Try to eat all meals away from the bedroom, and preferably at a table where possible as this can help to aid digestion, which is also key to a good night sleep.
