Whether it's snuggling down in your own bed, to get your head into a good book. Or tucking your little ones in to read them a bedtime story. Reading is a big part of many of our lives.

What is National Reading Day?

National Reading Day is an annual event, created to encourage young people to increase their love of reading and improve their current reading levels.
Many young children love a good story, but it's usually read to them, or shown to them on TV, make the most of this year's national reading day and encourage them to read their own stories, and move on to the next level of reading!

Book Lovers

There is a divide in the UK, those who love to read, and those who don't. Book lovers strongly believe that those who do not enjoy reading, just haven't found the right book yet. This may be the same for your little readers. If you are struggling to get them to enjoy reading their own books, try a range of different styles of books, you may not yet have found something that sparks their interest. Remember to consider the programmes that they watch on tv, as this can impact the stories that they would be interested in reading, although you may have to guide their reading if the reading age for this type of book is more advanced than their current reading age.

Reading Before Bed

Many of us bring our children up with a story before bed, there are many benefits to reading before bed for all ages. As they become more competent readers, encourage them to read their own stories before bed, but if you have a little book worm on your hands, make sure you have a lights off time, so they don't end up reading into the night. Use a lamp for them to read at bedtime, as this can help to reduce the light waking them up. By encouraging books before bed, they are away from screens for longer before they do go to sleep. This can help to improve the quality of sleep that they are getting.
Even as adults, reading a good book before bed can help to promote a good night's sleep, so next time you're struggling to drift off, rather than picking up the phone, or switching the TV on, pick up a book and read a chapter or two, you may find it works better.
