According to studies, approximately three quarters (71%) of UK adults don’t get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Even more surprising, one in seven Brits frequently have very low levels of sleep a night, that being under five hours each night. 

The exact amount of sleep humans need is quite a hotly debated topic. However, as a general rule, everyone should have, at least, eight hours of sleep each night. For many people, this is easier said than done. There are many reasons that cause the lack of sleep including stress, sleeping disorders such as insomnia, looking after young children, and work schedules, to name just a few.

While you sleep, your blood pressure naturally goes down. One of the main causes of heart attacks is high blood pressure. Having high blood pressure can damage the arteries, cause blockages, and prevent blood flow to the heart. Overtime, it can result in a heart attack. Having a lack of sleep means your blood pressure stays higher for a longer period of time. Getting a good night’s sleep allows your body’s blood pressure to regulate itself and lowers the risk of heart disease.

3) Lowers The Risk Of Weight Gain

A study suggests that people who often sleep less than seven hours a night are more likely to have a higher body mass index (BMI) and are more likely to develop obesity compared to those who regularly get the recommended amount of sleep.

Sleep deprivation can be linked to unhealthy weight gain, especially in children and adolescents as they need more sleep than adults. Not getting enough sleep can affect a part of the brain that controls ghrelin, which is the hunger hormone, and salt retention. Poor sleep is also associated with higher inflammatory markers and increased fatigue, which may affect a person’s ability to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
