Tips To Survive The Hottest Nights

Posted on - 22nd August 2022

The UK has seen one of the hottest summers on record and with that comes very hot evenings. Let's look at ways to survive the hottest nights.

The UK is seeing one of the hottest summers on record. While there are some positives to having warmer temperatures, mainly the lower chance of rain and the increased potential for summer barbecues, the hotter weather provides does produce some issues. One of the biggest problems people in the UK face, is trying to get to sleep on hot summer nights.

Most British homes are not built in with air conditioning, meaning that even during the evening, it is quite hard to cool your bedroom down.

All of this doom and gloom being said, there are a few techniques you can implement in order to help you survive these warm, sticky and hot summer nights. Whether you are struggling to sleep on a mattress in Telford, or all the way up in Scotland, there are still things you can do to help you get to sleep.

Ensure You Have Water Available

Before going to sleep, you might want to stock up on water to ensure you do not become dehydrated. However, this can lead to needing needing the bathroom in the middle of the night. Because of this, you might opt not to drink too much water. This being said, this technique canbe to your detriment.

Before going to bed, you will want to ensure you have a glass or bottle of water readily available. Not only will this offer you a pleasurable piece of mind regarding the fact you know you have water available, when drinking water it can help to cool you down.

Cool Your Room Down Before You Go To Sleep

While this one might seem like a no brainer, it does not make it any less relevant. Before you even get into bed, you should be looking to cool your bedroom down in anyway you can. Depending on the outside temperature, this can be easier said than done.

Sometimes temperatures can drop significantly before going to bed, either due to rainfall or just by natural gustsof wind. Just how it gets cooler does not really matter but what does matter is that you take advantage of it.

Weather you opt to simply open a window if temperatures outside are cooler, or if you decide to position a fan with a block of ice in front of it at your mattress, there are numerous ways to cool down your mattress and subsequently your bedroom.

Try Not To Sleep With Your Fan On All Night

While on the topic of fans being used at night, we thought we should highlight that it is not recommended for a fan to be on and pointed at you all night. Having the fan on before you go to sleep, at least for a short time, will not do much harm but when the fan is lefted on; it can do a lot more harm than good.

Firstly, with energy bills on the rise, you do not want to leave electrical items on all night. Consistently leaving electrical products on all night is a surefire way to end up with a hefty bill.

Additionally, when you have a fan pointed on you all night it is said to have some negative health effects. This can include, but are not limited to; dryness of the mouth and throat, congestion, sole muscles and becoming more sensitive to allergens. It is pretty safe to say that if you can, you should not sleep with a fan on all night.

Block Out The Sun

When it is sunny, the glass in your windows effectively acts as a magnifying glass. This significantly warms up your room and can even leave you feeling rather uncomfortable.

As such, you will probably want to block out the sun as and when you can in an attempt to cool your room down. You can either do this by keeping your blinds or curtain closed when the sun is at its strongest. While you maybe think this will not make that much of a difference, implementing this technique from time to time has proven beyond effective.
