What Are Mattresses MAde Of

With such a wide range of mattresses on the market, choosing the right one has a number of key deciding factors. And for some, this can include the question "What is my mattress made of?". With more focus on people being wary of how their products are made and sourced, and whether they are economical and sustainable, we have pulled together some vital information for you to help make the process easier.

Traditional Spring Mattresses

One of the longest-running mattresses styles that are available today, the traditional sprung mattresses have kept their popularity since their mass availability. However, over the years it has been adapted slightly to suit the ever-changing market.
Historically the springs that make up the bulk of the mattress would be topped with padding of hay or horsehair. However, this is now a thing of the past. The majority of modern spring mattresses are made using steel springs, topped with a synthetic foam layer. However, natural spring mattresses are available where this top layer is made from the likes of wool, latex or cotton fibres.

Pocket Sprung Mattresses

As the traditional mattress above, these are now typically made using steel coils and synthetic fires to create the topping foam. However, with this style, each of the springs is attached in place and separated by its own pocket of material to keep it in place. Similar to the above, this pocket can either be made using synthetic material or using natural fibres.

Combination Mattresses

Combination mattresses are made up using a combination of the traditional spring, or pocket sprung mattresses, combined with a memory foam topper. Memory foam is usually made of polyurethane foam. This style of foam is safer for the environment than other types of plastics. Unfortunately, there are cheaper memory foams that are made using other plastics that arent so good for the environment.

Latex Mattresses

The latest in technology where mattresses are concerned is the latex mattress. This style of mattresses has been praised by those who suffer heavily from allergies as they are hypoallergenic. The majority of this style of mattresses are made from naturally occurring latex, which is sustainably farmed from trees. Making them the most environmentally friendly mattress on the market. However, care needs to be taken when choosing your latex mattress as there is a number available that are made from synthetic latex.
