With summer on the horizon (we know it might not always feel like it with all the rain, hail and even snow in May), you'll be looking for ways to cool down when we finally see that hot weather. Here at Dial A Mattress, we gathered together some of the team to find out what tips they have for the next heatwave.

Neglect Your Blinds

Most of us wake up in the morning and open the curtains or blinds in our bedrooms. While it's nice to let a bit of sun and fresh air into the bedroom, in summer this can actually do more harm than good.
Leaving your blinds or curtains closed during the day, particularly if the sun hits your window throughout the day can help to reduce the impact. By shielding the room from the suns direct rays, you are less likely to walk into an over-warm room when it's time for bed.

Two Duvets Just Aren't Enough

With the drastic change in temperature between the seasons, many of us have both a winter and summer duvet. The winter one is usually a high tog, super thick and heavy duvet, while the summer one is much thinner and a lower tog.
For the majority of the year, these two duvets will suffice. However, on those super hot days, why not take away the duvet completely? Some of you, us included, might not be able to sleep without anything covering you at all. So treat yourself to a cotton sheet. This will help to keep you covered, yet cool.

Fan Tricks

Unfortunately, fans alone aren't magic devices that can instantly turn your hot room into a comfortable oasis. Here are a few fan tips for getting your room cooler:
Position your fan in front of an open window. This will only work if the temperature has started to drop outside already. If it is still blazing hot, you might want to avoid this as it will draw in the hot air.
Use some ice of ice blocks. Position your fan behind a tray of ice or ice blocks, this will allow it to push the cool rising air in your direction, rather than warm air.
Look into an air cooler. Many of these will use water to cool the room, so you just need to remember to top it up when you are using it.

Cold Compress

If you are too hot before you get into bed, you are already setting yourself up for a warm sticky night. Cooling yourself down first and being prepared to go straight to sleep will significantly help.
You can start to cool yourself down by firstly having a cool drink, make sure it is not too cold as this will have the opposite effect as your body tries to regulate its temperature. Then apply cooling compresses to the main pressure points around the body. Your wrists, neck, back of knees and inner elbows are great places to try. You might also find cooling your inner thighs down will have a significant impact thanks to the veins that run through it.

Choose A More Appropriate Mattress

A number of older mattresses will retain heat, making them very uncomfortable during the summer. Most modern mattresses have now been designed to help keep the user cooler throughout the night. Changing out your mattress for a newer one can be the first step in staying comfortable.
Modern latex mattresses are great all year round, from keeping you cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter and even hypoallergenic.
