Have you given your mattress a chance to break in? Find out how to help the process along

break in your new mattress

When you purchase a new mattress, you might find that it isn't quite as comfortable as you originally anticipated. This might not be because you have chosen the wrong mattress, with any mattress there is a period of breaking in time. So don't think about sending it back and swapping it out just yet! Give it time to get nice and cosy first.

How Long Does It Take To Break In?

A new mattress can take anywhere from 30 to 90 days (or nights) to break in and for you to find it as comfortable as you expected to start with. You may also need to remember that it will not feel like your old mattress, even when broken in, and that mattress would have been at the end of its life, and significantly softer than it once was.
Think of your new mattress like a new pair of shoes, they'll take a few wears to break in, and when they are, you'll never want to go back to your old, battered pair.

How Can We Break In Our New Mattress?

There are a few things you can do to help improve the comfort of your new mattress, here are just a few:
Let it breathe
When your new mattress arrives, the first thing you want to do is to dress it up in wonderfully soft new bedding. However, we advise you to let your mattress breathe before doing so. Remove any and all wrapping, plastic and ties in which your mattress has been delivered. You will then want to lay your new mattress out flat to allow it to breathe and relax. Offering you a comfier first night. Ideally, you will leave the mattress to relax from early morning until bedtime, where possible. Some mattresses may arrive with a plastic smell, this can disturb your sleep and alter the clean smell of your fresh bedding. If this scent hasn't gone or reduced a couple of hours before bedtime, look at freshening with fabric spray, such as febreeze, but again allow time for this to disperse and settle before you try to sleep on the mattress.

Apply pressure
If you are struggling with how firm your new mattress has arrived, and are looking for a quicker fix, you might want to look at applying the pressure to soften your mattress. You can apply pressure to your mattress by carefully walking on it. This allows the mattress to soften naturally

Give it time
The best way to break in your new mattress is to ultimately give it time. We can't emphasise enough that nothing will lead to your new mattress being entirely comfortable as it will be if you continue to use it every night. Your new mattress will adjust itself to your body and how you sleep over a period of time. Before you know it, you will be enjoying the best night's sleep you have ever had.
